ImageNation and Black Indie Cinema in Harlem

The marketing of Black films like Lumumba, Killer of Sheep and Trouble the Water helped to prepared ImageNation with it's plans to open the nation's only indie cinema dedicated to Black and Brown films.  http://cityroom/blogs.nytimes.com/2009/jazz-museum-and-cinema-arechosen-for-harlem-site/

Is it important to have a indie cinema in the heart of Harlem that is dedicated to Black and Brown films? Tell us what you think...

  1. Yes, because films made by Black and Latino directors rarely get shown. We are making more films and the films need a home. ImageNation's Sol Cinema will be that home. http://www.imagenation.us/pages/main.htm

  2. it would even be better to have a global network propelled by the above vision, I can just imagine looking forward to the "World film fest by blacks for blacks"... Yes a hard goal to attain, yet one that bears fruits for my children and theirs. (I'm frm South Africa by the way, so I can't really comment about the origins being at the heart of harlem, hence my above thought)

But before the above vision is achieved, it would be nice to have greater awareness and accessibility to ImageNation and also be given opportunity to help where I can. I say this because expression is my living, my lifestyle and if there is an opportunity to be involved and assist in authenticating its footsteps, then I'm willing! 1

  3. Wow, thanks Thembi,
ImageNation did a film festival in South Africa a little more than a few years back and vowed to return. Once the Harlem cinema is up we do plan to open a cinema in SA. We will be starting a monthly film series in SA soon. Please email me at gregory@imagenation.us when you get a second we can use your help.

    Thanks for your comment.

  4. Yes I do think it's important to have an indie cinema that is dedicated to Black and Brown films. There is a wealth of talent out there that doesn't get enough exposure. Not only do we need theaters...but we need distribution to get those films out there to the masses.

I am very excited to see that your dream will become a reality.

  5. I have worked closely with the founders of Imagenation and I find their persistance in pursuit of their vision inspiring. I (www.allthingsharlem.com) and my associates are also on a mission to create a Harlem based news and information site to cover every aspect of community life in Harlem. Both of our missions require community support.
